November Book Club Meeting

Postby steffanymaher on Mon Nov 02, 2009 10:20 am

Hey, all! We're meeting at my house on Friday, November 13th at 6:30 pm. Our book for Nov. is Wild Swans by Jung Chang. I'm thinking we should go with a Chinese food theme (the obvious). Yummm. . . . Please RSVP here if you can make it and what you'd like to bring. Looking forward to another great Book Club meeting with you all! :D

Happy Reading,
Steff

Sounds great .... I better start reading!

Maybe I will tackle Hot & Sour soup, I have a couple of cookbooks that include a section on Chinese food. So, I will consult and get back.

Ben and I are attending a fund raiser for the Congenital Heart Center at U of M that night. Looking forward to it, but sorry that I will have to miss this book club. I read the book and it was a challenge keeping all of the names and locations straight, but I learned a lot about that horrible period of history.

Have fun...also, does anyone have my copy of the John Adams boxed set DVD. I thought I had loaned it to Sam or maybe Jamie? Thanks.

I'll be there. I'm also available the following Friday if you switch it, Steff. Since we're doing Chinese food, I think I will pick up some take-out from a Chinese restaurant, like ... sweet and sour pork maybe.

Emily, I don't have your John Adams DVDs. I loved the series but never borrowed your DVDs. I did have your Malcolm Gladwell book for awhile, then loaned it to Kim.

I'm planning on coming and looking forward to the menu! I have heard that the new Chinese restuarant in ER has amazing crab rangoons; so I will bring some of those so we can give them a try! See you all next week!

Hello everyone,
As I'm 'cheating' (not reading the book but getting some info/summaries/comments) on line, due to lack of time ( I already saw how long the book is, and know already how little time I get to read), I came across an interview with Jung Chang about the book, by the BBC World Book Club, and I think it might be interesting to listen to it right there, maybe. It's over 20 min long, though. (First broadcast March 2003 )

http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/speci ... age2.shtml

And even if I seem like the beginner that I actually am in this 'book club business', I must tell you all, I loved this website!!! And can't wait to listen to many of all those interesting interviews!!! But probably all the ol... I mean.. all the experts book club goers (joke) ;-) have used this kind of website before.

Oh, I already have the FORTUNE COOKIES!!! The only chiness food I make is a sweet and sour, but that is already taken, so, I'll try to come up with dessert maybe? I mean... besides the FORTUNE COOKIES. ;-)

I am SO EXCITED that you're bringing crab rangoon, Dawn! They are my favorite. I was thinking of making them (Melissa Bird gave me a great recipe a few years ago), but now I won't have to, and I'm sure I'll be busy enough getting my houe ready anyway! :D Mmmm. . . I love egg rolls, too. . . and sweet and sour anything. This is shaping up to be a great night! ;)

Looking forward to seeing you all!

Nelly - thanks for the website tip. I would love to hear an author interview at bclub. Anyone else? Hope that I can get through the book - on page 60 and have conferences this week. Hhhmmm, not going to place any bets on it.

see you all on Fri,

Steff, do you have enough soup bowls for us to use???
Im so excited for the eggrolls, rangoons, ALL of it! I love Chinese food!
And yes, I would also be up for hearing the author interview at bc. Maybe while we eat or something???
See you girls on Friday! Sam is coming as well but I will let her post her own response cuz I dont know what she's bringing....

I have about 10-12 bowls, Anne -- good question. If you have some that you could bring along, that would be great! I'm not quite sure how many people are coming. I know Pattra is coming with Nelly, and I think Nelly is coming with Kim and Amy Sh. (at least, that's what she told me), and Jamie Lightner may be coming, too. Anyway, it may be a rather large group, so I may not have enough bowls! :D Extras would be welcome.

Jackie called today and said she's probably going to bring some egg rolls and some kind of lo mein.

If anyone is going to the Chinese restaurant, would you get a container of their red sweet and sour sauce? (Maybe Jamie W-J is getting that, if she's bringing sweet and sour pork.) I just love dipping the crab rangoon and egg rolls in the sweet and sour! (Yes, I'm being picky. :))

See y'all tomorrow night! Soooooooo looking forward to it!

I will be there and I think I am bringing Mongolian Beef - yummy! I may make brownies as well, but not guaranteeing it... Doesn't this book make you glad to live in America?!
