October?? Classics Club

Postby steffanymaher on Sun Aug 30, 2009 7:06 pm

Hi, everyone! Let's vote here and decide what our next Classic will be. I vote for a shorter classic and meeting in October (though our Book Club meeting is going to be October 16th, so I would rather meet Monday, Oct. 26th than the 19th. Otherwise we would have another month of Classics meeting right after our regular Book Club meeting). Or we could meet in November, but it would probably be the Monday of Thanksgiving week. Pick your poison. :D

I vote for The Pearl or The Count of Monte Cristo (again  ).

I'm in for the Pearl if the group goes that way - the Count of Monte Cristo is a hard read - and after Pillars I'm going to feel lazy. I would still be interested in the The Bell Jar, if others are interested.

I am very flexible. Kind of busy now with the start up of school and life in general. Perhaps The Pearl is a good choice.

I like the idea of The Pearl, mainly because I just read a Steinbeck book last year that I really enjoyed. Other than that, I am completely open to other possibilities (including The Count Of Monte Cristo, Steffany!). I am also good with any of the dates you suggested Steffany ... 10/19, 10/26 or 11/23.

I don't want to make anyone choose my book -- The Pearl was just a suggestion. Please vote for whichever book you'd like to read the most!

I'll give it a bit more time, and then tally the votes and send out the winner, okay?

I don't care to read The Pearl as I read it in High School. Classics Club for me is a chance to read classics I have not read yet. (OK Heather, tell everyone how you really feel). So, I vote for Bell Jar or The Jungle. But, always an optimist - The Pearl would be a short reread ;-D

Re: Voting and hosting

Are we the most indecisive group ever or what? Or maybe that's just me. I'm like Heather ... I'm happy to read anything I haven't already read. Actually, I would make an exception for The Jungle ... great book and relevant to some modern-day food issues I am currently interested in. But we're supposed to be deciding between The Pearl and The Bell Jar, right? So just forget I mentioned The Jungle.

Since Heather already read The Pearl and no one has expressed a problem with The Bell Jar (that I remember), I will vote for The Bell Jar. :)

I can host October 26th, but Dimondale might be a long way to drive on a weeknight, especially for those of you near Jackson. On the other hand, Jackie's house for Tom Sawyer last month wasn't too bad for me, even including that we talked until 10:30p! On the third hand, that was not a "school" or "work" night for any of us and October 26 will be. Whatever ... we can have it at my house if no one else volunteers.

Hey, all. Amy Smitter emailed me her vote -- The Bell Jar. I'm going with The Pearl (since I have to read it anyway ;). We'll wait for everyone else's votes.

I'm fine with going to your house, Jamie! We'll have to figure out desserts sometime, too.

Okay I have decided to be decisive and am opting for the Bell Jar as well. It seems to me that I may have read The Pearl many moons ago. I would be interested to see what this book is all about. I think I am pretty flexible on dates too.

Directions to my house:

776 Tanbark Drive
Dimondale 48821
517-646-5506

From Eaton Rapids, go north on M-99 for 10 miles, past the traffic light at Holt Road.
Turn left at the blinking light onto Dimondale Highway. Go 1.5 miles to the traffic circle at the Mobile gas station.
Turn right onto Creyts Road. Go 1/2 mile to the first road on the right.
Turn right onto Tanbark Drive. We are 1/2 mile down Tanbark, near the very back of the neighborhood. House # 776.

I will provide regular and decaf coffee.

Just so the verdict is on here, too:

We're reading The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath and meeting at Jamie's house on Monday, October 26th at 7:00 pm.

Please post here if you can bring a dessert this time -- thanks! :D

If anyone needs a copy of Bell Jar just let me know. It only took 2 days to read ... after Pillars is seemed like a Novella :P

I'd love to make it this time, and actually read the book, can I borrow a copy? how can I get ahold of Heather? And whenever we can vote AGAIN for 'The Count Of Monte Cristo'... even if I end up watching the movie due to lack of time, I've always wanted to read it!!
I'd like to offer zucchini bread, if I still have zucchini by then, my 'production' has been very slow this year, and they are about done! :-(
Or I'll think about some other bread/cake.
